Overview

Refresh Psychotherapy is a Female Autistic-owned private practice in South Slope, Brooklyn. We are a culturally and clinically diverse psychotherapy practice serving New Yorkers. We provide both in-person and virtual care. We presently serve only adults but have decided to expand our work to providing care for teens ages 13 and up. The vast majority of our clients use insurance to pay for their care, making mental health care accessible. We are looking for a passionate clinician who genuinely enjoys working with adolescents and is interested in making teen psychotherapy a meaningful focus of their clinical work. We are not simply looking for a clinician who is willing to see teens. We are looking for someone who understands that adolescents are a distinct clinical population and is excited about helping us grow this area of the practice. A successful clinician in our practice is adept at diagnosis, has the ability to think creatively and critically, is focused on delivering quality treatment to our clients, and has the confidence needed to support the growth of the practice. Adolescents are navigating a unique developmental period involving increasing independence, identity development, changing family relationships, academic and social pressures, and the transition toward adulthood. Effective adolescent psychotherapy requires the ability to take teens seriously as individuals while understanding their needs within the larger context of their families, schools, peer relationships, and developmental stage. We are looking for a clinician who can build genuine therapeutic relationships with teens while maintaining appropriate clinical boundaries and who understands the balance between adolescent privacy and autonomy and appropriate parent/caregiver involvement. This position will provide care solely to teens ages 13 and up. We are looking for a clinician who is able to work in person at our South Slope office on Saturdays and Sundays and provide virtual care during the week.

About you

This is not an entry-level or “learn as you go” position. This is not a position for clinicians who are looking to learn adolescent psychotherapy on the job. Applicants should already possess experience providing psychotherapy to adolescents and be able to independently assess, diagnose, and treat teen clients from their first day of employment.

Working with adolescents requires a clinical skill set that extends beyond adapting adult psychotherapy for younger clients. Applicants should have an existing understanding of adolescent development and be comfortable navigating confidentiality and its limits, caregiver involvement, family dynamics, school and peer concerns, risk assessment, safety planning, and other clinical issues specific to treating minors.

We are seeking clinicians whose work with teens is developmentally appropriate, strengths-based, collaborative, and autonomy-supportive. Clinicians should be able to establish trust with adolescents while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and recognizing when collaboration with parents, caregivers, schools, or other providers is clinically necessary.

While we value ongoing consultation and professional development, supervision is intended to deepen existing expertise—not provide foundational training in adolescent psychotherapy.

Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Marriage & Family Therapy, or Creative Arts Therapy is required
  • LMSW, LCSW, LMHC, or LMFT
  • Prior experience providing psychotherapy to adolescents is required
