Defuse with Dialectical Behavior Therapy

My name is Bianca Nieto and I am a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW). I am certified in working with personality disorders, specialize in working with mood disorders, and am passionate about Dialectical Behavior Therapy. With joy and excitement, I am announcing that Refresh will be running a DBT-based group. “Defuse with DBT” will be a group that will help folks learn how to manage and create healthy relationships using DBT skills. The group will run for 12 weeks, beginning on September 12th, 2022 from 7-8 pm. The group will be held virtually.

Living with a personality disorder such as BPD and a mood disorder like bipolar can often make regulating emotions and tolerating distress difficult. Especially as a young adult. The inability to tolerate or regulate can often lead to conflict with the people you care about the most. Overwhelming emotions and thoughts can lead to missteps in relationships. When thoughts and emotions get out of control folks struggle to advocate, set boundaries, communicate thoughts, and express emotions. When folks cannot effectively defuse conflict or manage and create healthy relationships, relationships stay unhealthy or you lose the people you care about the most.

Managing and creating healthy relationships with family, friends, and romantic partners can be difficult when you do not have the tools. Defuse with DBT will give you the tools to create boundaries, problem solve, advocate for yourself, express yourself, communicate efficiently, and how to cope when thoughts and emotions become overwhelming. Defuse with DBT will focus on how emotional regulation and distress tolerance skills can help improve your relationships. The base of the group is a workbook, but the rest of the structure is eclectic. Your experiences, identities, and participation are what is going to allow you to learn and grow. Unfortunately, labels and diagnoses allow people to think we are too much or incapable of being in a relationship. With these skills you can prove people wrong and prove to yourself you deserve happy and healthy relationships.
