Brithny grew up in Ohio, the Carolinas, and Shanghai, China. She’s lived in New York City for almost ten years now and has never felt more at home. She holds a BA in Psychology and English from Duke University. She completed the Policy Journalism and Media Studies Certificate program while at Duke. She is currently in her second year of pursuing a Master of Social Work from Columbia University.
Prior to her social work career, Brithny worked in marketing across the entertainment space, primarily in media and music. Her experience spans from editorial production to artist management. Brithny’s first clinical internship was at the New York City Council, where she helped provide services to predominantly low-income communities of color. The combination of her love of social work and her intimate knowledge about the entertainment industry will help artistic clients feel a sense of understanding.
Brithny is empathetic and strives to create a safe environment that encourages open and honest communication. She is warm and empowering—a motivating counselor and a gentle listener. She takes the relationship between client and clinician seriously, and will use her skills to help clients gain insight about their thoughts, feelings and behaviors.
She works with multiple therapy models, including strength-based, trauma-focused, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral (CBT), dialectical behavioral (DBT), mindfulness-based (MBCT), music therapy, and experiential therapy. Her research specialities include stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, ADD/ADHD, gender and sexuality, behavior modification, workplace issues, and family dynamics.
She proudly self-identifies as an Asian American 1.5 generation immigrant and as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. She also feels a particular affinity for international communities and third-culture kids, having lived abroad as an expat in several countries. Brithny is bilingual in Mandarin Chinese and English.
Brithny loves looking through vintage stores, catching up with friends and generally vibing at concert venues. She enjoys going to the park with her dog. Additionally, she likes daytime hikes, and tending to apartment plants.
One of her favorite things about NYC is the availability of public transportation. She is actively working on her love/hate relationship with the MTA, and likes to Citi Bike when she can.
Brithny volunteers for community music organizations, Parkinson’s disease foundations, and local animal shelters. She is passionate about raising awareness and resolving the behavioral health disparities that minority groups face in health care.
